Ingredients
- Brinjal- ½ cup
- Tamarind pulp- 1 tbsp
- Grated coconut- 1 tbsp
- Dry Kashmiri red chili- 4
- Soaked rentio tuvar dal- ¾ cup
- Turmeric powder- ½ tsp
- Salt to taste
- Chopped onions- ½ cup
- Coriander powder- 1 tbsp
- Oil- 1 tsp
- Mustard seeds- 1 tsp
- Asafoetida- a pinch
- Sliced onions- ¼ cup
How to make south Indian brinjal dal?
- Take a non-stick pan on a medium flame and dry roast the red chilies on a medium flame for 2 minutes.
- Now blend it in a mixer to a smooth powder.
- Now take a pressure cooker, add toor dal, turmeric powder, salt and 1.25 cups of water and cook it for 3 whistles.
- Let the pressure of the cooker release on its own.
- Add chopped onions, brinjal, and ¼ cup of water, mix it well and cook it on a medium flame for 4-5 minutes.
- Add coconut-red chili mixture, tamarind pulp, coriander powder, water, salt and mix it well on a medium flame for 2 minutes.
- For tempering heat oil in a small non-stick pan and add mustard seeds in it.
- Once seeds started to crackle, add asafoetida, sliced onion and sauté it on a medium flame for 2 minutes.
- Add the tempering to the dal along with ¼ cup of water, mix it well and cook on a medium flame for 1 minute.
- Serve hot.
