How to make sambhar with toor dal?

Ingredients


For the sambhar


Chopped onion- 1
Brinjal- 2
Rentio tuwar dal- 1 cup
Drumstick- 1
Potato- 1
Tomato- 1 chopped
Tamarind- 1 tbsp
Salt to taste

For the paste


Red chilies- 4-6
Coriander seeds- 1 tbsp
Fenugreek- 1 tbsp
Rentio tuwar dal- 1 tbsp
Asafoetida- ½ tbsp
Turmeric powder- 1 tbsp
Urad dal- 1 tbsp
Chana dal- 1 tbsp

For tempering


Mustard seeds- 1 tbsp
Curry leaves- 6
Asafoetida- ¼ tbsp
Oil- 1tbsp

Method


For the masala paste


  1. Roast all the ingredients listed under the masala paste in  a non-stick pan for the 4-5 minutes
  2. Now grind the paste in a blender with the help of water and keep it aside.

How to proceed


  1. Wash the dal and pressure cook it by adding onion, Brinjal and drumstick, potato and 2 cups of water in it.
  2. Add tomato, tamarind pulp, sambhar masala paste, salt and 4 cups of water and bring to boil
  3. For tempering heat the ghee in a fry pan add mustard seeds
  4. Once mustard started crackle add  curry leaves and asafoetida and add it to the sambhar and simmer it for 10 minutes
  5. Serve hot
