Method


  1. Wash the toor dal and soak it with enough water in the bowl at least for the 1 hour.
  2. Take a pressure cooker and add dal, tomatoes, garlic, ginger, turmeric, salt and 2.5 cups of water in a pressure cooker, mix it well and pressure cook it for 4 whistles.
  3. Let the pressure of the cooker release on its own.
  4. Now add the tamarind pulp, green chilies, coriander powder, and chili powder, salt, mix it well and cook it on a medium flame for 3 to 4 minutes while stirring occasionally.
  5. Heat the ghee in a non-stick frypan, add cumin seeds, mustard seeds and sauté it on a medium flame for 30 seconds.
  6. Now add asafoetida, garlic, curry leaves, Kashmiri red chilies and sauté it on a medium flame for 1 minute.
  7. Pour the tempering over the dal, mix it well.
  8. Serve hot with rice or Rotis.
